1:20 PM San Diego Arab Film Festival The San Diego Arab Film Festival announced its line up and schedule for 2019. It will open on April 5 with the Yemeni film 10 Days Before the Wedding, the first commercial film in modern Yemeni history and that country’s first submission to the Oscars. Filming under extremely difficult circumstances and with a miniscule budget, director Amr Gamal produced a film that has been greeted enthusiastically by audiences in Yemen and internationally.

10 Days Before the Wedding is one of 9 feature films and 6 shorts that will be featured during the Festival. Like last year, the festival will host 3 screenings at the Museum of Photographic Arts in Balboa Park and 7 at the AMC 20 complex at Westfield Mission Valley. Taken together, this year’s offerings represent the Festival’s broadest and highest quality line up yet.

7:00 PM Irish Music: Seamus Egan Project It’s hard to think of an artist in traditional Irish music more influential than Seamus Egan. From his beginnings as a teen prodigy, to his groundbreaking solo work with Shanachie Records, to his founding of the Irish-American powerhouse band Solas, to his current work as one of the leading composers and interpreters of the tradition, Egan has inspired multiple generations of musicians and helped define the sound of Irish music today.

As a multi-instrumentalist, he’s put his mark on the sound of the Irish flute, tenor banjo, guitar, mandolin, tin whistle, and low whistle, among others. As a composer, he was behind the soundtrack for the award-winning film The Brothers McMullen, co-wrote Sarah McLachlan’s breakout hit, “Weep Not for the Memories,” and has scored numerous documentaries and indie films since. As a performer, few others can make so many instruments or such wickedly complex ornaments seem so effortless. Music comes as naturally to Seamus Egan as breath, but his mastery of the tradition is only one facet of his plans to move the music forward.

The Seamus Egan Project explores the reaches of the Irish tradition and beyond. Egan will be joined by composer, producer, guitarist, and improviser Kyle Sanna, and guitar, mandolin, banjo player Owen Marshall.

7:30 PM Music: Georgian Ensemble Adilei and the Chamgeliani Sisters Join the CWM in welcoming Ensemble Adilei and the Chamgeliani Sisters from the Republic of Georgia. This very special evening will introduce you to the sacred and secular spaces of one of the oldest polyphonic singing traditions in Europe.

Ensemble Adilei will impress you with their vocal prowess and technical skills in k’rimanch’uli, a yodeling technique from the western part of the country. Their energy and dedication to the folk tradition will warm you over.

The Chamgeliani sisters will sing a repertoire of songs from their native village of Lakhushdi (Upper Svaneti). Accompanied by the chuniri, a banjo-sized three-stringed bowed viol, Ana and Madona weave the tales of their mountainous region known for its beautiful landscape and unique medieval towers.

The evening will start in the sanctity of St. George Serbian Orthodox Church where the audience will be engulfed by the sacred space and sounds of the Georgian a cappella choir. Following intermission, we will gather again, this time inside the Social Hall for light refreshments and folk songs extolling the virtues of the homeland, long life, and love, among others. The repertoire may also include dance songs and lullabies.

Don't miss your chance to experience traditional Georgian polyphonic singing, one of the worlds threatened musical traditions identified on UNESCO's List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. (less)
